Surviving Skin Cancer
According to the Center for Disease Control, people who live in Kentucky are among those in the United States who have the highest risk of skin cancer. Basal cell carcinoma is characterized by round pearl-like or darkly pigmented bumps on the skin and tends to affect only the upper layers of the skin. Dr. Dowden can easily treat this form of carcinoma. Melanoma, which appears as brown to black lesions with irregular boundaries, tends to attack deeper into the skin, and it easily metastasizes to other parts of the body. While this form of skin cancer is survivable, the patient must have immediate treatment so cancer does not spread to other areas of the body.
Treatment of Skin Cancer
The treatment of skin cancer depends on the extent cancer has spread in the skin layers. The treatment for most cases of basal cell carcinoma involves Dr. Dowden excising the cancerous tissue and then closing the wound with sutures. With cases of basal cell skin cancer that have progressed deeper into the skin, MOHS surgery provides the highest cure rate. This outpatient procedure involves removing the layers of skin containing the malignant cells sequentially until a microscopic examination indicates that no cancer remains. Another procedure, called frozen section, involves freezing the cancerous tissue until the remaining tissue is cancer-free.
Once the Dr. Dowden has removed the cancerous lesion; the patient might need reconstructive surgery to minimize scarring or other disfigurement. The simplest form of reconstructive surgery involves Dr. Dowden covering the wound with a flap of skin. In cases where he has removed the extensive amount of tissue, Dr. Dowden will use skin grafts to reduce scarring and disfigurement.
