Chin Augmentation in Lexington, KY
Appearance can be greatly improved by reshaping the chin or inserting an implant if your chin is small or misshapen. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. William L. Dowden recommends chin augmentations to those who are looking to define and balance their faces. Our patients in Lexington, Georgetown and the surrounding area of Kentucky cannot believe how a minor adjustment like chin augmentation can completely change their appearance.
What is Chin Augmentation?
Chin augmentation is a procedure that is used to reshape the chin. Chin augmentations may involve the moving and reshaping of bone or having an implant placed inside the chin. Because chin implants help give the chin a round appearance, patients with receding chins and normal bites benefit the most from chin augmentations. Chin implants may be made of bone and tissue, or they may be made of silicone or a biological material. To ensure that the face remains well-balanced, the patient may also undergo a rhinoplasty (nose surgery) or facial liposuction.
Benefits of Chin Augmentation
- An increase in the chin’s:
- Vertical height
- A decrease or elimination of chin dimpling
- Concealment of jowls
- An overall improvement of facial proportions
What Happens During the Chin Augmentation Procedure?
Any patient who plans to have a chin augmentation should discuss the surgery with Dr. Dowden. General anesthesia is used for chin augmentation procedures. If the chin is re-shaped by removing bone, the incision is made inside the mouth at the gum line. Depending on the patient’s treatment plan, the jaw bone may be moved. Implants are inserted through an incision under the chin and attached with screws or sutures. Typically the procedure takes one to three hours if the patient receives no other procedures during the surgery.
When can Normal Activities be Resumed after the Chin Augmentation Procedure?
Patients are restricted to light activities after the surgery. Typically, normal activities can be resumed seven to ten days after the surgery.
Is There any Pain after the Chin Augmentation Procedure?
Patients experience tenderness and swelling after the surgery. The pain should be manageable with medications, and the swelling should resolve within six weeks. Patients may experience a pulling sensation at the incision for up to one week and numbness for up to three months.
Am I a Good Candidate for a Chin Augmentation?
Dr. Dowden commonly recommends chin augmentations to people who are dealing with low self-esteem due to a small chin that creates an undefined profile, as well as an unbalanced face.
