Spider Veins in Lexington, KY
At Dowden Plastic Surgery, we use sclerotherapy, or the closing off of affected veins through chemical solution injections, to remove spider veins for patients in Lexington, Georgetown, and the surrounding areas of Kentucky.
What is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a non-invasive, FDA-approved procedure that treats varicose malformations and, more specifically, spider veins. Using a small needle, problem veins are injected with a dilute sclerosant, which causes the veins to shrink and dissolve while blood flow is rerouted to healthy veins. Within a short period, the problem veins will be naturally absorbed by the surrounding tissue.
What are the Benefits of Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy will improve the appearance of spider veins dramatically. It is significantly less time consuming than surgery and is also superior to laser treatment because the sclerosant will close veins that cause spider veins to form, rendering a recurrence less likely.
How is Sclerotherapy Performed?
A low-risk procedure that usually takes a minimal amount of time, the physician, guided by ultrasound, injects a liquid solution into problem malformations. Multiple areas of the malformation may need to be treated depending on the size of the lesion. Dr. Dowden will then massage and apply compression to the area to disperse the solution and assure blood doesn’t enter the injected vessel. A follow-up session several weeks after the initial procedure is common in order to improve the appearance of veins.
One of the latest advancements that our team has been working with is the use of ultrasound guidance to help target spider veins. This method allows Dr. Dowden to pinpoint deeper veins accurately. This, in addition to the use of compression hose, can also reduce the pain associated with spider veins.
When will the Results of Sclerotherapy be Noticed?
Problem veins will gradually disappear, so adhering to the physician’s post-operative instructions will ensure you look your best. It is recommended that you wear special stockings or bandages for two to three weeks following the procedure in order to keep the treated area compressed.
How Long will the Results of Sclerotherapy Last?
Treated veins dissolve and will never reappear, although it is common for new veins to develop after three to five years.
