Rhinoplasty in Lexington, KY
A large or misshapen nose can make you worry about your facial appearance. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. William L. Dowden is extremely talented in using his delicate, steady hands to perform rhinoplasty on patients in Lexington, Georgetown and the surrounding area of Kentucky to enhance the appearance of the nose and increase overall attractiveness.
What is Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is a surgery that changes nose size and shape and may alter function. Nasal surgery is one of the earliest forms of cosmetic plastic surgery and has been popular for many years. Although often performed for aesthetic purposes, rhinoplasty is also done to correct breathing problems or repair birth defects.
Heredity determines nose shape and size, but that does not mean appearances cannot be changed. Rhinoplasty will increase or reduce nose size, adjust the bridge or tip shape, narrow the nostrils and change the alignment angle with regard to the upper lip. These maneuvers can also be used to correct breathing difficulties. Although nasal surgery will improve the overall nose appearance and give it a more harmonic balance with the face, it cannot correct any interpersonal or emotional issues related to personal appearance, nor will it create the ideal face.
- Improvements will be made to the shape, angle and size of your nose.
- Corrections will be made to structural problems that restrict breathing and cause congestion.
- A significant impact on your self-image and self-confidence.
The Rhinoplasty Procedure
Rhinoplasty surgery lasts for one or two hours and is generally done under either local or general anesthesia. Dr. Dowden uses two main approaches. He can work through an incision inside the nostrils, or he can make a small incision along the tissue separating the nostrils. Once he accesses cartilage, bone, and tissues through the cut, Dr. Dowden can trim, reshape, and sculpt the nose to create a new shape. Small pieces of skin might be removed to narrow the base.
After the surgery is complete, we pack the nose and insert splints to stabilize breathing passages and bolster the new shape. Swelling and puffiness are normal, along with some bruising and headache, which you can manage with medication. Bruising and swelling will subside after a few days, and patients can resume normal activities within a week or so.
You may not see the full results for a few months, but most people who have experienced rhinoplasty surgery are very pleased with their new appearance and enhanced self-confidence.
